Wix or another website builder is a good fit when you need a simple website up quickly and cheaply, and you are happy to run it yourself. A custom website pays off when it has to bring in customers from search for years, needs non-standard features or must belong entirely to you. Both routes are valid – they simply suit different situations. Below is an honest comparison of where a builder is strong and where a custom website wins.
What is a website builder and what is a custom website
A website builder is an online platform where you put the website together yourself from ready-made templates and blocks. Wix, Squarespace and similar platforms run on a subscription: you pay monthly or yearly, and the website only works on that platform.
A custom website is built for your needs by a developer or studio. It uses open technologies such as WordPress, Laravel or Astro and can run on almost any server. You pay for development once, and after that for the domain, hosting and, if needed, maintenance.
Wix vs custom website: comparison
| Criterion | Builder (Wix etc.) | Custom website |
|---|---|---|
| Upfront cost | Low: you start with a subscription | Higher: you pay for the development work |
| Ongoing costs | Monthly or yearly subscription, often plus paid apps | Domain and hosting every year, maintenance if needed |
| Who builds it | You | A developer or studio; you provide the content |
| Design | A template you can change within the platform’s limits | Your own style, with no template limits |
| Features | From the platform’s app catalogue | Built to your needs, including non-standard ones |
| SEO | The basic settings are there | Full control over code, structure and URLs |
| Speed | Depends on the platform, template and apps | Code and images can be optimised |
| Ownership and migration | The site only runs on the platform; no export | Your files and data; you can change servers |
When a website builder is a good choice
Builders are designed so that someone without coding skills can make a website. That is a real advantage, and in many cases it is enough. Wix or a similar platform works well when:
- you are just starting out and want to test an idea on a minimal budget;
- you only need a few pages: about you, services, contact;
- you have the time and inclination to build and update the website yourself;
- the website is short-term, for example for an event or a seasonal offer;
- search is not your main source of customers – they come through recommendations or social media.
It is also worth valuing your own time. If you spend several weekends on the website and later have to rebuild it, a cheap start may cost more than it seemed.
When a custom website is worth it
A custom website is the better fit when the website is an important part of the business, not just a business card online. Choose it when:
- many customers should come from Google search and you want full control over the website’s structure;
- the website needs to work in several languages;
- you need features that app catalogues do not offer: a specific catalogue, a calculator or bookings;
- the design should match your brand rather than a template other businesses use;
- you do not want to deal with the website yourself – you provide the content and the developer does the rest;
- it matters that the website and its data belong to you and you can change server or developer at any time.

What a builder and a custom website cost over several years
People often compare a builder’s monthly price with the cost of building a custom website. It is more accurate to compare the total costs over three to five years.
Builder: a monthly or yearly subscription + paid apps and add-ons + your time building and updating the site. If you stop paying the subscription, the website stops working.
Custom website: a one-off development cost (a simple company website – from €499) + the domain and hosting every year (website hosting – from €60/year) + maintenance, if you need it.
Over a short period, a builder is usually cheaper. Over a longer period the gap narrows, and sometimes a custom website costs less. What makes up the price of a custom website is explained in our article what affects the cost of a website.
SEO and speed: does a builder hold you back in search
No, a builder in itself does not stop a website from appearing in Google search. Google indexes Wix websites like any others, and the platform lets you set page titles, descriptions and image alt text. Visibility depends mostly on content: whether the website clearly answers what people are searching for.
The difference is the degree of control. On a custom website you can freely change the code, page URLs, structured data and image formats. That matters when you compete for popular search terms.
Speed matters too. Google assesses page experience using Core Web Vitals metrics: loading speed, responsiveness and layout stability. A builder site’s speed depends on the template and the apps you add, while a custom website can be optimised down to every file. Even so, neither a builder nor a custom website can promise a place in search results.
Wix or WordPress
This is a common question, because WordPress is sometimes seen as a builder. In fact it is an open-source content management system (CMS): you can install it on any suitable server, change the code and move the site elsewhere. Wix is a closed platform – convenient, but it only runs on Wix’s servers.
WordPress gives you more freedom but also more responsibility: the system and its plugins need regular updates. That is why a WordPress site is more often built and maintained by a specialist, while a Wix site is more often put together by the owner.
How to decide: three questions to ask yourself
If you are still unsure, answer three questions:
- Where will your customers come from? If mostly from recommendations and social media, a builder site is often enough. If from Google search, you need a website whose structure and content you fully control.
- Who will look after the website? If you have the time and inclination to do it yourself, a builder is convenient. If not, a custom website with maintenance will save you time.
- How long do you plan to use the website? A subscription suits a short project. In the long run, it matters more that the website belongs to you and grows with your business.
If at least two answers point towards search, the long term and less work on your side, choose a custom website.
How to move from Wix to a custom website
A Wix website cannot be exported to another server – Wix’s own help centre says so. So moving means building a new website and transferring the content from the old one. The main steps are:
- Gather your existing texts, photos and, if you have them, product data.
- List the addresses of all pages that already appear in search.
- Build a new website with a clearer structure that works on phones.
- Set up 301 redirects from the old addresses to the new pages.
- Point the domain to the new server, or transfer it if it was registered through Wix.
This step is what our website redesign service is for – a new website in place of the old one, keeping what already works in search.
